About this time, a despatch arrived from Captain Hill, of General Rosecrans's staff, stating that Forrest's cavalry was on the Ringgold and Rossville road, in General Thomas's rear. City Council. --A special meeting of the Council was held on Saturday evening at 4 o'clock. Present, Messrs. Saunders, (President,) Grattan, Burr, Crutchfield, Scott, Epps, Hill, Stockes, and Wynne. The subject of the free school in Jefferson Ward was taken up, and Dr. John Dove, by leave of the Council, made a statement in reference thereto, from which it appeared that there was a difference between himself and the School Commissioners, touching the occupancy of the basement room of directors or managers of the Seamen's Bethel, and whether any agreement in writing has been entered into ceding to the city the use of the basement of said Bethel for the purposes of a District School. The following resolution, offered by Mr. Hill, was referred to the Commissioners of Streets: Resolved, That the Commissioners of Streets be and are hereby directed to investigate all differences existing between the city of Richmond and the Richmond and York River Railroad Company, gr
Ranaway--$25 reward --A negro man named Gilbert, aged between 40 and 50 years. His color is black; whiskers grey, under the chin. He is about six feet high; black hair. Hi clothing is a black coat and plaid summer pants. I bought him at Dickinson & Hill's auction room as! Tuesday. He was brought here by a gentleman named Thos. G. Neal, of North Carolina.
