iladelphia latter of the 1st inst. says: Mrs. Henry S. Gilpin the grandmother of Mr. Wm. L. Johnson, who was arrested a week since on the charge of having been an officer in the Confederates army, and of being about to rejoin it, appeared this afternoon before Judge Cadwallader, and entered bill in the sum of ten thousand dollars that the accused should refrain from the commission of any offence against the laws of the United States. The statement that Mr. Johnson is a nephew of Gen. Johnston is an entire mistake; bears no relationship whatever to hat officer. Arrest of members of the Maryland Legislature. The Baltimore Exchange, of Monday, says: We noticed on Saturday the arrest at Cumberland of the Hon. Thomas J. McKug; and we subsequently learned that Mr. Josias H. Gordon, also a member of the Legislature, was arrested at the Relay House on Friday evening. We present that both of these gentlemen are either suspicious of entertaining disloyal sentiments' or
from Tennessee inducts me to depart from established usage, and to make to you this communication in advance of official reports. From telegraphic dispatches received from official sources, I am able to announce to you, with entire confidence, that it has pleased Almighty God to crown the Confederate arms with a glorious and decisive victory over our invaders. On the morning of the 6th instant the converging columns of our army were combined by its Commander-in-Chief, General A.S. Johnston, in an assault on the Federal army, then encamped near Pittsburg, on the Tennessee river. After a hard fought battle of ten hours, the enemy was driven in disorder from his position and pursued to the Tennessee river, where, under cover of his gunboats, be was, at the last accounts, endeavoring to effect his retreat by aid of his transports.
