y, Quartermaster of General Morgan's division, who left the Gap at noon on Tuesday last, the twelfth instant, and he gives a full and explicit denial to the rebel reports of our reverses in that vicinity. Since the fight at Wallace's Cross-Roads, in the middle of July, there has been no regular engagement near the Gap until last Saturday, when Col. De Courcey went out on a foraging party with his whole brigade, consisting of the Sixteenth and Forty-second Ohio and Twenty-second Kentucky, Col. Lindsey, and the Fourteenth Kentucky, Col. Cochran, of Gen. Baird's division. Col. Cochran was in advance with his regiment, about a mile and a half beyond Tazewell, on picket-duty, when he was attacked by four rebel regiments under Col. Rains, comprising the Eleventh and Forty-second Tennessee, Thirtieth Alabama, and Twenty-first Georgia. Col. Cochran immediately formed his command on each side of the road, each flank supported by a piece of artillery from Foster's Wisconsin battery, under co
Admitted a citizen. --Mr. John Lindsey, the well-known butcher, who is a native of "Merrie England," and who has been a resident of this city for 27 years past, was yesterday admitted a citizen of the sovereign State of Virginia by the Hustings Court, Judge Lyons presiding. He is the first gentleman who has been "naturalized" before the above Court since the passage of the Secession Ordinance. He is the first gentleman who has been "naturalized" before the above Court since the passage of the Secession Ordinance. Since Mr. Lindsey's arrival in Virginia he has certainly afforded about as many indubitable evidences of his intention to become a citizen of the Old Dominion, as any gentleman with whom we are acquainted.
--A dispute occurred yesterday about 12 o'clock, in the "Dime Saloon." Main street, between Mr. John Lindsey, of this city, and a young man attached to one of the Ranger companies from Texas or New Orleans, which resulted in some expression on the part of Mr. Lindsey which was replied to by the young man with the threat of shooting him. Thereupon, as represented to us by a bystander, the young man was pressed back by Mr. Lindsey, who repeatedly called upon him to shoot. After struggling some time to unloose his pistol, the stranger accomplished his wish and did shoot him. He left the house unmolested, as Mr. Lindsey did not, for a moment or two, proclaim that he had been wounded. When he did so, the man was followed and arrested on Governor street by Mr. C. G. Thompson, and carried bee ball, (which penetrated through the abdomen and lodged in the flesh of the opposite thigh,) Mr. Lindsey walked up the street as far as Spence's corner, not seeming to feel very much inconvenience f

It was also stated that the ball, which had passed entirely through the stomach and lodged in the thigh, had ball, which had passed entirely through the stomach and lodged in the thigh, had been extracted. From the favorable representations made of the condition of Mr. Lindsey, the Mayor was induced to think it possible he might be able to attend the examination if postponed till to-morrow. It was accordingly laid over till that time.
Dangerously ill. --It was said yesterday that the condition of Mr. John Lindsey, shot on Wednesday by Henry Cooper, was not so favorable as it had been, and that the weather was decidedly against the chances of his recovery. Cooper will be before the Mayor again to-day, to be examined for committing the offence.
