L. Orr was born at Craytonville, Pendleton district (now Anderson county), S. C., on May 12, 1822. His great-grandfather, Robert Orr, emigrated from Ireland in 1730, and settled in Bucks county, Pa., from whence he and his son, Jehu Orr, volunteered in the Continental army, and fought through the Revolutionary war, Jehu Orr attaining the rank of captain. Jehu Orr married Jane Butcher Clinkscales, and settled in the upper part of South Carolina; and his son, Christopher Orr, who married Marthe McCann, was the father of James Lawrence. James L. Orr worked on the farm and kept books in his father's store between the school terms, until he went to the labor school, near Pendleton, and thence to the university of Virginia, where he took a literary course and commenced studying law. He completed his law course and was admitted to the bar in 1843, beginning at once the practice, and editing the Anderson Gazette.
