peper Court House, Brandy Station and Stevensburg, Va. In 1864 the command was ordered back to South Carolina, where it encountered the enemy on James and John's islands. In November, 1864, it was ordered to Wilmington, N. C., and fought at Forts Fisher and Anderson, also at the battle of Bentonville, which closed the long and gallant career of Captain Dean as a Confederate soldier. The captain is now a resident of Spartanburg county, and engaged in farming: In 1860 he was married to Eugenia A. Miller, and they have five children living: James M., Kate A., Alvin H., A. Boyne and Anna Belle. The second son, Alvin H. Dean, born March 22, 1863, is an active member of the O'Neal camp, Sons of Confederate Veterans, and has done much to encourage the organization by eloquent addresses delivered in its interest. He studied at Furman university and completed a law course at Vanderbilt university, Tenn., where he was graduated in 1884. Since November of that year, when he was admitted to
