wledge of John Brown. In 1895 he published Sketches from Concord and Appledore, and in 1905 Cambridge Sketches, both intimate biographies of famous men. In 1892 appeared Real and Ideal in Literature, and in 1897 Modern English Prose Writers. He also wrote Four Great Venetians and the Midsummer of Italian Art; a Life of Otto von Bismarck; Life and Genius of Nathaniel Hawthorne; the Life and Public Services of George Luther Stearns, his distinguished father; and True Republicanism. Miss Annie H. Ryder, who has conducted a private school in Medford for a dozen years, is the author of two inspiring books of essays, Hold Up Your Heads, Girls, and Go Right On, Girls, and has compiled New Every Morning, a day book of selections appropriate for girls. Joseph Edgar Chamberlin, editor, who originated the Listener column of the Boston Transcript, published two volumes selected from it, wrote a monograph on John Brown, included in the Beacon Biographies, and a book of curious interest ent
