When Napoleon, at twenty-six years of age, took command of the Army of Italy, that army consisted of four effective divisions, under the command of Generals Massena, Augureau, Laharpe and Serrurier, each mustering about seven thousand men. The cavalry only numbered about three thousand more, and was in the most miserable plight imaginable. The draught horses had perished for want, and nothing remained for the transport of artillery but about two hundred mules.
