of artillery, four pieces, Capt. P. B. Anderson; Captain Miller's battery, four pieces; a detachment of Pittsylvania cavalry, Lieut. Dabney The artillery was posted on the hill left of my position, which had been entrenched. Immediately after the troops were turned out the 12th Georgia and 52d Virginia were ordered into the trenches. The Pittsylvania cavalry, dismounted, under Lieut. Dabney, also went into the trenches, armed with carbines. A large column of the enemy, led by one Slater, a traitor, well acquainted with the country, approached the left of this position by a road running along a leading ridge.--About half an hour after the attack was made on the right, this column came up on the left to our trenches. They were evidently surprised to find us entrenched. Here the brave Anderson, by a fatal mistake, lost his life.--As the enemy advanced, he rode to the trench and invited them in, thinking they were our returning pickets, at the same time telling our men not to

ty. A gentleman who witnessed a skirmish between our pickets and those of the enemy, states that our cavalry pickets in Isle of Wight were driven across the Black water at Franklin, Southampton county, on Tuesday last. Col. Marshall was in command of our force on this side of the river, and the bridge was guarded by a 32-pounder of Richardson's James City Artillery, which opened in reply to the enemy's pieces. The fire from this gun was well aimed, and the shell exploding among the enemy caused them to retreat. Upon crossing the railroad a shell from another 32 pounder of the same battery, under command of Lieut. Slater, fell in the midst of the enemy and emptied several saddles. Their loss was three killed and several wounded, according to information of citizens residing in the vicinity. In his retreat, the enemy burnt a bridge to prevent pursuit. They are supposed to have numbered 1,500. It is believed they designed a raid on the railroad between Petersburg and Weldon.
