Stealing a cow. --William Spicer, a spectacle-looking white man, about forty-five years of age, was taken before Justice Neltless of Harriet county yesterday, to answer the charge of stealing a cow from Dr. John H. Garnett, of Henrico county, ospicious, also was subsequently traced to this city and found at the First Market, where she had been offered for sale by Spicer to Mr. George Freeman, of Manchester. In company with the accused was a negro man, who, it is claimed by Spicer, employeSpicer, employed him to sell the animal; but the truth of this statement is doubted.--Dr. Garnett stated before the Justice that the cow was an estray, and had been running with his own for about two years. He had taken proper steps to ascertain her owner, but no on for examination before the County Court, and bail was refused him. Matthew, the negro alluded to above as having employed Spicer to sell the cow for him, was also examined by Justice Nettles, and remanded for further trial by a higher court.
Mayor's Court, yesterday-- --Recorder Caskie presiding.--In this court, yesterday, no case worthy of elaboration was brought forward, and we only append a brief summary: W. B. Sims, a tailor, living on Second street, was fined $20 for dealing with a slave without permission from his owner; a similar fine was imposed upon James Moore for permitting his slave to go at large; John H. Metior was also fined $20 for selling liquor without a license; William Spicer, charged with stealing a cow from Dr. John R. Garnett, of Henrico, was remanded to the custody of the officers to be taken before a county justice for examination, the offence having been committed beyond the limits of the city; about one dozen negroes were ordered to be whipped for a variety of delinquencies charged against them.
