ions such a system,--still we, so far from bringing any such accusation against the Bible, have always claimed it in behalf of justice and liberty. It is from Moses Stuart, it is from Daniel Webster, it is from the Church and the politicians, that this attack on the Bible comes, and not from us. encouraged the pro-slavery portion of the Faculty to warn the students against any connection with the American A. S. Society, on the ground that this would repel men who are prejudiced against the name Anti-slavery, because they do not wish to identify themselves with Garrison and his imprudences. So the renascent organization took the harmless name of the African's Friend Society, calculated, like that of the American Union, to exert a kind, moral influence on the community. Then Prof. Moses Stuart advised that the Colonization committee be dissolved, and cautioned the students against excitement on the subject of slavery, and above all not to pray about it publicly. Thus the peace of the graveyard was secured in the Theological Seminary at Andover. The neighboring institution of Phillips Academy underwent a similar experience; but fifty students, though nearly all professors of religion and studying for the ministry, were less subservient than those of the divinity school.

olunteered his support of Mason's fugitive-slave bill, with all its provisions, to the fullest extent. As the speech was first published, he pledged himself to support the bill with Butler's amendment; but in a revision the relative pronoun which was transferred so that he appeared to pledge himself to support it only as amended by himself. The transfer of the relative pronoun led to a controversy in the newspapers,——--Boston Courier, May 6, 1850 Advertiser, May 7; Atlas, May 8 and 9; Moses Stuart's Conscience and the Constitution, p. 67. He intimated his purpose to offer some amendments which would qualify its harshness, and later proposed one securing to the alleged fugitive a trial by jury; but his speeches and letters of subsequent date make it clear that the bill unamended would have received his vote. In a letter, May 15, 1850 (Webster's Works, vol. VI. p. 557), he treated the State personal liberty laws as an insuperable difficulty in the way of a jury trial. He uniform

Its passage was signalized by the firing of one hundred guns on the Common. Webster's partisans, such was their intensity of feeling, vehe Compromise and the Fugitive Slave law. Rev. Orville Dewey, at Pittsfield, defended the Compromise; but his position was exceptional among the Unitarians. Moses Stuart, the Andover theologian, defended slavery from the Bible in learned exegesis. Culture was often dissociated from humanity. The professors at Cambridge were iight, therefore, in supposing that your words would come with a welcome increased by the coldness of others. rginia comedians may justly be called the best Virginia novel of the old regime, unless possibly Swallow Barn Ibid should be excepted, for reality as well as for colour and spirit. During the Civil War Cooke fought, as captain of cavalry, under Stuart, and had experiences which he afterwards turned to use in a series of Confederate romances, most notable of which is Surry of eagle's Nest (1866). But in this and in the related tales Hilt to Hilt (1869) and Mohun (1869), as well as in numerous le issue because of the policy of the churches. The Rev. Nehemiah Adams won notoriety by his favorable South side view of slavery (1854), as did also Nathan Lord, President of Dartmouth College, the Rev. Samuel Seabury of the Episcopal Church, Moses Stuart, Professor of Hebrew at Andover, and John Henry Hopkins, Episcopal Bishop of Vermont, for their various defences of slavery.
