Anti-rent party. The greater part of Columbia, Rensselaer, Greene, Delaware, and Albany counties in the State of New York belonged to manors, the grants of which had been made to patroons by the Dutch West India Company, and renewed by James H., the principal ones being Rensselaerswyck and Livingston Manor. The tenants had deeds for their farms, but paid an annual rental instead of a principal sum. Dissatisfaction with this state of affairs had begun to show itself as early as 1790, and when, in 1839, Stephen Van Rensselaer, who had allowed much of his rent to remain in arrears, died, the tenants refused to pay rents to his successor, disguised themselves as Injuns, and for ten years carried on a reign of terror that practically suspended the operation of law and the payment of rent in the entire district. Benedict, Lewis, 1817- Military officer; born in Albany, N. Y., Sept. 2, 1817; was a graduate of Williams College; was admitted to the bar in 1841; was surrogate of Albany county in 1848, and member of Assembly in 1861. He entered the military service as lieutenant-colonel of volunteers in 1861; served in the campaign on the Peninsula in 1862; was captured, and confined in Libby and Salisbury prisons several months, and when exchanged was sent to the Department of the Gulf, where he was distinguished for his wisdom and bravery. he served as brigadiergeneral in the Red River campaign, till killed in the battle of Pleasant Hill, La., April 9, 1864.

Watervliet, A city in Albany county, N. Y., formerly the village of West Troy; on the Hudson River opposite the city of Troy. The city has large commercial interests by reason of its location at the head of navigation on the river and at an entrance of the Erie and Champlain canals into the river, and its direct communication by river and canals with lakes Champlain, Erie, and Ontario. It is best known, however, as the seat of an extensive arsenal, established by the United States government in 1807, and comprising one of the largest plants in existence for the manufacture of heavy ordnance, and shot, shell, and mounts therefor. The arsenal and the large stone magazines for powder and ammunition are within a reservation of about 110 acres of ground, which is bisected by the Erie Canal. Bribery in the New York Legislature. Albany, N. Y., Feb. 18. --Jay Gibbons, member of the Assembly from the first district of this (Albany) county, was arrested this morning, on a warrant issued by Police Justice Parsons, on complaint of District Attorney Shafer, charging said Jay Gibbons with bribery and corruption in demanding money for his vote, on a bill to increase the salary of the Deputy District Attorney of Albany co.--Gibbons offered to cast his vote in its favor for $100, and intimated that he could defeat the bill, and would do so if he was not paid the said amount. He waived an examination before the magistrate, and was committed.
