There, after a sharp skirmish, March 28, 1865. he captured two hundred Home Guards. Thence he moved through mountain gaps to Wilkesboroa, where the advance skirmished March 29. and captured prisoners and stores. Continuing his march, he crossed the Yadkin River April 2. at Jonesville, and, turning northward, went on to Cranberry Plain, in Carroll County, Virginia. From that point he sent Colonel Miller to Wytheville, to destroy the railway in that vicinity, and with the main force he moved eastward to Jacksonville, skirmishing with Confederates at the crossing of Big Red Island Creek. From Jacksonville, Major Wagner advanced on Salem, and sweeping along the railway eastward, destroyed it from New River Bridge to within four miles of Lynchburg. Fatal accident. --A shocking accident occurred in Carroll county, Va., on the 6th inst., which resulted in the death of Chas. Potter, son of Mr. Wm. C. Potter of that county.--Mr. Potter was engaged in drying plank, when he was called from home, and left his son in charge of the kiln. The little fellow had gone inside for the purpose of kindling the fire, when the scaffold overhead fell, completely crushing and killing him before assistance could avail.

Calfee's Ferry, Pulaski county, Va., Jacob Philieger postmaster; on the route from Newbern to Reed Island. Wood Lawn, Carroll county, Va., E. S. Fulton postmaster; on route from Hillsville to Grayson Court-House. Office at White Top, Grayson county, Va., is discontinued. Appointments. J. L. Hilkey postmaster at Bellington, Barbour county, Va., vice E. R. Douglass, removed.--David Taylor postmaster at Chincoteague, Accomac county, vice Isaac K. Stevenson, resigned.
John Worrell, of Carroll county, Va., was thrown from his horse and killed on the 18th inst. Roasting ears are selling at Columbus, Ga at $2 per dozen.
Fatal accident. --Last Friday week, Mr. Henry McGee, of Carroll county, Va., while hauling some corn home his horses took fright, ran off, and threw him out of the wagon against a sapling, killing him instantly.
