authorities in this city. We have since received a statement of the facts gather from a private letter written by Quartermaster J. R. Mounteastle, of Company, "F," and deem it our duty to-day it before the public. The letter is dated Camp on Elk Mountain October 3d. Six days previous to that time, when the regiment was encamped on Middle. Mountain, (In the western part of Pocahonas county, near the Randolph line,) an order to retreat was issued, though from what cause is not definitly stated.baggage, provisions, and other articles which involved a loss of property estimated at fifteen thousand dollars value. The regiment struggled forward, marching through mud knee deep, suffering many hardships, and finally succeeded in reaching Elk Mountain. The troops had only a scanty supply of food, and the letter mentions that "F." company it just come in from three days picket duty on short rations.
