d officer of the Confederate States provisional army, who rose from the rank of captain to that of major-general in the army of Northern Virginia, was born at Newport, R. I., the son of Mann Page Lomax, of Virginia, a major of ordnance in the United States army. His mother, Elizabeth Lindsay, was a descendant of Captain Lindsay, laca, the storming of Chapultepec and the capture of the city of Mexico.
