In the Southern Historical Papers for 1885, appears the report of General R. S. Ewell of the campaign from the Rapidan to Spotsylvania, in May, 1864, in whi 1864, where he, after-being baptized in the blood of the heroic and dauntless Rodes,
General Rodes was bending from his saddle and giving instructions to Colonel Thruston when the fatal bullet pierced his brain.
He fell, without a groan, in the arms of the colonel, saturating him with the warm life current. was himself so fea may meet with that appreciation its intent demands, this narrative is submitted, subject to the criticism of any and all the surviving true men actively engaged in battle on either or all of the days covered by it.
