and enterprise in coming in such large numbers to honor the memory of their old commander. From the depot they marched at once to the cemetery at the head of the town. During the march the band played Dixie, Maryland, My Maryland, and the Bonnie Blue Flag. Arriving at the cemetery gate, the procession entered to the roll of muffled drums, and after marching around the grave of Stonewall Jackson, General Steuart, Lieutenant W. P. Zollinger, Lieutenant-Colonel Clemment Sullivan, Captain John W. Torsch, Captain Frank Marcoe, of General Gordon's staff, and Captain A. J. Smith, deposited at the head of the grave a handsome bronze Memorial Tablet to Jackson. The tablet is about five feet high. At the head is the word Stonewall; on one side June 28th, on the other 1883. Just underneath the word Stonewall is the coat-of-arms of Maryland, and below that the following legend: Fatti machii parole femine—From the survivors of his men in Maryland. April 3—About dark last night Captain Torsch, in command of the battalion, received orders from General McComb to preparwere all around us, and, therefore, but a small part of the battalion under Captain Torsch succeeded in extricating itself, although the boys fought like devils. When Torsch reached Hatcher's Run he found the Boydton plank road bridge in the hands of the enemy, when he and his few followers plunged into the stream and swam to the opposite bank, and joined the forces on that side. Torsch had but one officer left, Adjutant McCullough. The rest is soon told. In the retreat we assisted in brdience to the last command we were ever to receive from our beloved leader, Captain Torsch surrendered his command of sixty-three men, all that was left of our once s
Maryland volunteers --The following companies, belonging to the Maryland Line, having been mustered in, will leave this city to morrow morning for a point where two other companies of Marylander await their arrival to form a battalion before proceeding to join Gen. Jackson, viz: Company C. Capt. J. R. Herbert, 120 men, company D, Capt. Joseph L. McAleer, 90 men, and company E, Capt. John W. Torsch, 90 men. Two other companies of citizens of the above State will be completed and ready to leave by Saturday.
