General Hancock in his report speaks of the magnificent charge made by Birney's and Barlow's division on the 12th of May, and says, it stands unsurpassed for daring, courage and brilliant success. Official War Records, 67, p. 339. These divisions included, as will be seen by referring to the list of regiments, many Massachusetts organizations. In his report of flags captured, he mentions First Sergeant S. G. Viall and Sergeant Daniel Murphy (both of 19th Mass.) as each capturing a flag. Official War Records, 67. p. 348. The latter received a medal of honor soon after. Private F. M. Whitman (Co. G, 35th Mass.) also received one, ten years later, for distinguished services in action at Antietam and Spotsylvania.
