Wood, Thomas John 1823-
Military engineer; born in Munfordville, Ky., Sept. 25, 1823; graduated at West Point in 1845, entering the corps of topographical engineers.
He served under General Taylor in the war with Mexico, and afterwards against the Indians on the Texan frontier.
In 1855 he became captain of cavalry; in October, 1861, was commissioned brigadier-general of volunteers; and in November following was promoted colonel of the 2d United States Cavalry.
In February, 1862, he was placed in command of a division in the Army of the Ohio, and took part in the battle of Shiloh.
In the fall he was engaged in the battle of Perryville and in the pursuit of Bragg.
In the battle of Stone River he was wounded.
He commanded a division in the battle of Chickamauga and at Missionary Ridge.
He also assisted in the relief of Knoxville, and was active in the Atlanta campaign (1864), being wounded at Lovejoy's Station.
He commanded the 4th Corps in the campaign against Hood in Tenne
