ntinues effective, and the Northern journals complain of its disastrous effects. The Baltimore papers of the 12th instant, have also been received here. The Federals claim a victory at Belmont, (opposite Columbus, Ky.,) during the first part of the day, but towards the close they were overwhelmed by a superior force, and acknowledge a heavy loss on their side. Generals McClernand and Grant were in command, and Col. Logan and Foakes's regiments lost heavily. The Federals report Col. John V. Wright, of Tennessee, killed, and admit the loss on their side to be from 600 to 700 in killed, wounded and missing. There has been great rejoicing throughout the North over the Federal successes at Port Royal. A steamer was momentarily expected at Annapolis, which would bring the details "Ion, " the well-known Washington correspondent of the Baltimore Sun, says that it is understood that the Federal advance will be expedited by the success of the fleet in the South, and adds that Gen.
Tennessee Congressmen elected. --Sufficient is known, says the Memphis Argus, to place beyond doubt the success of the following candidates; First district, J. B. Heiskell; Second, William G. Swan; Fourth. E. L. Geraenshire; Fifth, Henry S. Foote; Sixth, Merideth P. Gentry; Seventh, George W. Jones; Eighth, Thomas Menees; Ninth, J. D. C. Atkins; Eleventh, David M. Currin. Although full returns have not been received from the Third and Tenth districts, it is generally conceded that A. G. Welcker has been elected in the former, and Colonel John V. Wright in the latter.
