, and in other operations of the cavalry in this department. An unfortunate difference arose between General Walker and Gen. John S. Marmaduke, which led to a duel between these officers. An attempt to prevent the duel was made by General Price, who ordered both generals to remain closely in their quarters. The order did not reach General Walker, but was received by General Marmaduke. By an unfortunate series of mishaps the duel was not prevented, and taking place on the morning of September 6, 1863, General Walker was wounded, and died on the 19th of the same month. Major-General Cadmus M. Wilcox Major-General Cadmus M. Wilcox, a skillful Confederate officer, distinguished in all the campaigns of the army of Northern Virginia, was born in Wayne county, N.
