Southern Historical Society Papers, Volume 16. (ed. Reverend J. William Jones), A tribute to his memory by Bishop C. T. Quintard. (search)
October. To my very great regret I am obliged to decline your generous hospitality. My pressing official duties will oblige me to be in a distant part of the State on the 4th. I greatly regret this, as I am most anxious to meet the members of Forbes' Bivouac, of which I am rejoiced to be a member. Then, too, I wished to attend the meeting that I might embrace the occasion to pay some fitting tribute to my dear friend, that true man and grand soldier, the late Major-General B. F. Cheatham. e drunk from the same canteen! We have shared our blankets and tents together, And have marched and fought in all kinds of weather, And hungry and full we have been; Had days of battle and days of rest, But this memory I cling to and love the best— We have drunk from the same canteen! I beg you to make my cordial salutations to the members of Forbes' Bivouac and to my friends generally. I am, very faithfully yours, Charles Todd Quintard.
