It was considered of great advantage to the cotton and wool-growing interest of the country, and on 1 Sept. 1799, a company styled the Whittemore Brothers (Amos, William and Samuel) commenced business in card factory in the Northwest Parish of Cambridge. Twenty-three machines were in operation and forty persons employed in this factory in 1801 (Holmes ). The machines numbered fifty-five in 1809 (Fiske ).
