l, of South Carolina. We have received, and read with great admiration, the pamphlet on "The South," by Rev. Dr. Thornwell, Pastor of the Presbyterian Church in Columbia, S. C., who stands at the head of the Presbyterian clergy in America. We need say nothing of Dr. Thornwell to Presbyterians, but to those not familiar with the name of the great men of that denomination, we may mention that no one man in the Presbyterian Church is ever spoken of as the peer of Dr. Thornwell, except Dr. Breckinridge, of Kentucky, and there are a good many who think that in power of logic and in profoundness and clearness of mind, Dr. Thornwell is his superior. That he does not enter more frequently the polemical lists, is probably owing to his gentleness of disposition and moderation of spirit. He is a true Carolina gentleman, and never deems it necessary to sink the gentleman in the ecclesiastic.
