In proof of what I have repeatedly asserted, that there exists in this State, if in the entire South, no party in favor of reconstruction, I enclose you the card of a lawyer of wealth and eminence of Vicksburg, Wm. O. Smedes, Esq., who is also the President of, and large owner in, the Southern Railroad Company, to the True Delta, of New Orleans, correcting an anonymous correspondent's statement, to the effect that he and other citizens of Mississippi were "secretly preparing for a canvass for State officers" in opposition to the friends of the Southern Confederacy. Indeed, he goes so far as to assert that he "sincerely desires the young Republic to command the respect of the world," and holds all opposition to its performance and stability to be unpatriotic."
