They have nine sewing machines, and their zeal and industry are remarkable, even in the midst of the general excitement, when all vie with each other who can do the most for the Old Commonwealth. Two Infantry companies and one very superior troop of Cavalry having lately left us, the town would be deserted but for the presence of many strangers who have left Alexandria or your city to take refuge with us; among these the venerable form of Judge Wayne, of the Supreme Court, attracts most attention. Others have found homes in the neighborhood. At the beautiful residence of Mr. Alexander Rives, our Senator, a large company is brilliantly entertained in spite of his recent affliction. He is a true Virginian in his large-hearted hospitality, and patriots are doubly glad to see this spirit survive among our rich men, as it predicates well for the pecuniary aid they can render the State, now that she needs their assistance.
