Solferino (Italy) (search for this): article 20
Bayonets. --It is to be kept in mind that our battles are to be determined by the bayonet. Few special shots are made in the excitement of a raging conflict, nor is mere marksmanship or evolution to have any decided effect upon the general result. We must depend upon our hand-to- hand resources. As the Zouaves and Chasseurs d'afrique on the field of Magenia and Solferino refused to accept their rations of powder and ball, but rushed forward and plunged their bayonets in the hearts of the enemy, so must we make up our minds to the fact not to stand off and fall in columns before the discharges of flying artillery and rattling musketry. Close with your antagonists as rapidly as possible, and then, in the flashes of the bowie-knife and the bayonet, let God and your might be the arbiters of our fate.
