tes Navy, but now a prisoner of war, that person appeared in Court on Saturday morning last, accompanied by his counsel, R. R. Howison, Esq. The following is a copy of the response to the writ: George D. Pleasants. Sheriff and Jailer of Henrico county, in response to the writ of habeas corpus awarded to Edward B. Boutwell, by the Circuit Court of the city of Richmond, produces the body of the said Edward B. Boutwell, and says: "That the said Edward B. Boutwell was confined in the jail of the county of Henrico at the instance and request of Gen. John H. Winder, of the C. S. Army, and that he is not advised of the grounds or reasons for his confinement. As the jail has been recently used by the Confederate Government for the confinement of prisoners of war, and also of persons charged with treason, he presumes that the said Boutwell is detained in custody either as a prisoner of war or as a person charged with treason; but of the facts of his case this respondent is not advised."
