he enemy provided with the most efficient means of attack, should have been forced to surrender, is, therefore, not a matter for surprise. The defence, though of brief duration, was gallant and honorable to the valor of the sons of the Old North State; and the surrender was certainly as free from humiliation as any surrender may be. The reduction of the fort, in this case, as at Fort Pulaski, was effected by the agency of the powerful breaching batteries of the enemy, mounting the heaviest Parrott guns.
