iment is of the Army of the West, under Beauregard, and composed of artillery, cavalry and infantry. Captain McLean was an officer in the celebrated Texas Ranger regiment during the Mexican war — a regiment commanded by Col. Jack Hays, Lieut. Col. Ben McCulloch, and Major Chevallie. He is the only surviving person who escaped from the attack made by a large band of guerrillas on a party of Rangers near China, Mexico, known as the Dr. Alsbury massacre, in September, 1846. McCulloch expressed an earnest desire to have Capt. McLean with him in the West, knowing his qualities as an officer and a soldier.
