James River and Kanawha canal. --We learn from the Superintendent of Repairs that the navigation between Lynchburg and this city may be regarded as more secure than it was even before the fresh of June last. The work at Daniel's Island has progressed so far that no apprehension exists as to a supply of water on the Lynchburg level. The improvement of the navigation between Lynchburg and Buchanan is progressing as rapidly as the means at the disposal of the company will justify. A number of hands have been impressed under authority given by the Government, and the work will be pushed as rapidly as its importance demands. The value of the canal as a medium for transportation of Government stores is more generally recognized than formerly, and the facilities thus afforded for a supply of iron from the mines of Rockbridge and Botetourt to the manufactories in this city, will be duly appreciated by the Ordnance Department.
