The Elections.
The returns received from the election held on Thursday last are so meagre that it is impossible to say who has been the successful candidate for Governor.
The heavy majorities received by Governor Smith in the army would seem to favor his success, whilst the majorities of Col. Flournoy in the South-Side and in some of the Southwestern counties leave the matter yet in doubt.
We think the official vote will be required to decide the contest.
In some of the Congressional districts the result is yet undecided.
It is pretty generally conceded that Lieut. Governor Montague has beaten Mr. Garnett in the first district, and that Mr. Whitfield has been elected in the 2d district.
In the 8th district it is now thought that Mr Barbour has defeated Mr. Dejarnette in the 12th Mr. Edmundson is thought to be elected over Mr. Staples, present member.
In the 13th the re-election of Mr. Preston is claimed.
In the 16th district the vote is very close between Dr. K dwell an
