Later from Charleston. bombardment of Sumter still going on--Fort Wagner Assaulted--the Assailants repulsed — suspension of the shelling of the city. Charleston, Aug. 25. --The enemy's land batteries have been maintaining a steady fire on Sumter all day. The fighting at Wagner was chiefly confined to the firing of our pickets on the enemy's suppers, who continue to approach Wagner. This evening, about dark, the enemy's batteries opened a furious fire on Wagner, preparatory, as was supposed, to an assault. The following official dispatch has just been received from Fort Sumter: 7:35 P. M.--There is an assault now being made on battery Wagner. (Signed) Alfred Rhett, Colonel Commanding. Affairs in the southwest. Jackson, Miss., Aug. 25. --A gentleman from Vicksburg reports an important military movement on foot. Its chamber has not transpired. A person from Benton also reports a force of 3,000 Yankees moving from Yazoo City towards Benton. A party of our cavalry lately crossed the Big Black and went within eight miles of Vicksburg, where they met a line of negro pickets and chased them from their posts. The Yankee cavalry came up to their assistance, when our men retired. [second Dispatch.] Jackson, Miss., Aug. 26. --Grant has taken a force from Vicksburg up the White river, after Gen. Price, who has lately given the Yankees a tremendous thrashing in that quarter. Gen. Grant has lately issued orders to the citizens of Warren and Hinds counties to return to their homes and resume their usual avocations. Reported Defeat of the Yankees in Arkansas, &c. Atlanta, Aug. 27. --A special to the Appeal, dated Canton, Aug. 25th, says the Yankees are reported defeated in Arkansas, on the White river, by General Price. Reinforcements have been sent from Vicksburg. Grant has gone to Natchez. The Federals have left North Mississippi, and trains are again running to Grenada and Panola.
Prison record. --At Castle Thunder yesterday were the following commitments: John A. Wasser, charged with selling a Government horse and being a suspicious character; G. Werner and Henry Vonberger, Yankees, P. Drourey, co B, 7th Ala; J D White, co E, 13th Ala; W W Smith co D, 44th Ala; Andrew Stimes, King and Queen; H O Godwin, co I, 8th Ga. At the Libby Prison five Yankees were received from Knoxville, Tenn., four from the 1st N. Y. cavalry, captured at Berryville, Va., Aug. 22; one from the 6th Ohio cavalry, captured at Orleans, Va., Aug. 25.
