of the 16th Gen. Martins splendid division of Alabamians and Georgians were moved forward to the front, Col. Morrison commanding the advance brigade, composed entirely of Georgians. At Rockford he met the enemy's pickets. These he drove without trouble for three miles, where he found the enemy in position with artillery. After a few minutes of sharp shooting Gen. Martin dismounted his entire division and moved them forward in line of battle to the attack. A few shots from some rifle and Parrott pieces caused the enemy to move their artillery, when their entire force followed. A line of skirmishers were thrown forward in advance of Martin's division, led by Gen. Vaughn. The enemy stubbornly resisted his advance, but still he pressed on. For two miles he drove them, when they were again found in position.
