point about two miles from our lines, separated to the right and left. A heavy skirmish commenced about noon on our right. The enemy advanced a strong line of skirmishes half way across a large field, where the deadened limber furnished them a good shelter, but after an hours' sharp skirmishing they retired rapidly, carrying with them several who had fallen. A heavy thunder storm occurred at this time, but rapid skirmishing continued unabated up to nightfall. The enemy had one 24 pound Parrott gun, some six miles to our left, on the Gotgotha road, and it bellowed its deep mouthed notes during the entire afternoon, shelling Jackson's cavalry camp. This gun and four 12 pounder Napoleons were the only artillery positions exposed on either side. The demonstrations of the enemy did not elicit a single response from our heavy ordnance during the entire day. We think the entire movements of the day were intended to feel and learn accurately the position of our lines. Sherman evi
