James yesterday. Sheridan has made his hasty raid from Staunton to the White House, passing through the counties of Augusta, Albemarle, Nelson, Fluvanna, Goochland, Louisa, Hanover and New Kent, and leaving some desolation in his track. It is reported that he destroyed a large quantity of subsistence in his route. We have heard of many individuals who were robbed by his brigands. From the White House it is conjectured his forces have proceeded to Grant, either across the country or up James river in transports. There was a very considerable bombardment near the Jerusalem plankroad, on the Petersburg lines, about daylight on Saturday morning. The firing was begun by our troops. The results, if any, are unknown. A Victory in North Carolina--General Johnston makes the Attack and Routs the enemy. The following official dispatch, from General Lee, was received yesterday: "Headquarters Armies Confederate States. March 20, 1865. "Hon. John C. Breckinridge, Secretary

o serve Sheridan's boys in the same way, as soon as they form a junction with Sherman. This they will not fail to do as soon as ordered by "Little Phil." Grant's army. A letter from Grant's army says: General Kantz's cavalry division made a reconnaissance from the right of the Army of the James on Sunday, in the direction of New Kent Courthouse, and found Pickett's infantry division, of Longstreet's corps, posted with a view of preventing Sheridan from passing down to the James river and joining Grant; but, nevertheless, Sheridan can, if he so chooses, still pass in that direction, for Longstreet dare not throw a force so far down the peninsula as to virtually leave the entire Army of the James in his rear. Brownlow as a Governor. Brownlow, the Governor elect of Tennessee, has just recovered twenty-five thousand dollars damages from two "secessionists," for "malicious treatment" of him in 1861. This new Governor, commenting on the verdict, says in his paper:
Liberality to be Imitated. A gentleman, a refugee, has placed at the disposal of reliable parties in this city a large sum of money, to be expended in the purchase of slaves who will voluntarily enlist in the army. The manumission papers of the slaves so purchased will be placed in proper hands, to be delivered when they have performed meritorious services or been honorably discharged. It is hoped that patriotic masters will (if they cannot afford to manumit and offer their slaves as a free gift to the army) send them forward, and dispose of them at reduced prices, for the purpose of having them enter the military service of the country. Gentlemen in the country can direct their letters to "Major Turner, commanding rendezvous for recruiting colored troops, Richmond, Virginia." Any number of negroes for sale on reasonable terms can be disposed of readily if sent to this city.
