ἀλήτ-ης [α^], ον, Dor. ἀλάτας , α, ; voc.
A.ἀλῆταS.OC1096, Dor. ἀλᾶτα ib.165: (ἀλάομαι):—wanderer, vagabond, Hom. only in Od., always of beggars (17.420, al.); in Trag. also of exiles, A.Ag.1282, Ch.1042, S.OC50, 746, E.Heracl.224, Supp.280 (lyr.):—τὸν μακρῶν ἀλάταν πόνων one who has wandered in long labour, S.Aj.888.
2. as Adj., vagrant, roving, “πόδ᾽ ἀλάτανE.El.139 (anap.); “βίος ἀλήτηςHdt.3.52; in later Prose, “ἄνδρεςD.Chr.1.9:—so also fem. ἀλῆτις , ιδος, D.P.490 (as v.l.); name of song in honour of Erigone, Ath.14.618e, Poll.4.55, Hsch.s.v.; cf. “ἐώρα11.
