A.carpenter's tool for drawing a circle, like our compasses, prob. a pin at the end of a string, Lat. tornus (Plin.HN7.198), Thgn.805; κυκλοτερὴς ὡς ἀπὸ τόρνου (of the representation of the earth in early maps) Hdt.4.36; “τροχὸς τόρνῳ γραφόμενος” E.Ba.1067 (perh. in signf. 11); “κύκλος τις ὡς τόρνοισιν ἐκμετρούμενος” Id.Fr.382.3.
2. κύκλου τ. the centre of a circle, X.Vect.1.6.
II. turning-lathe, “βόμβυκας τόρνου κάματον” A.Fr.57.3 (anap.); καθάπερ τῆς ἐν τόρνψ κυκλοφορουμένης σφαίρας as of a ball being turned in a lathe, Arist.
