ἀπο-μάχομαι [μα^], fut. -μαχοῦμαι,
A.fight from the walls of a fort or town, “τεῖχος ἱκανὸν ὥστε ἀπομάχεσθαι ἐκ τοῦ ἀναγκαιοτάτου ὕψους” Th. 1.90; βασίλεια ἱκανὰ ἀ. high or strong enough to fight from, X.Cyr. 3.1.1: abs., fight desperately, Id.An.6.2.6; “πρός τι” Plu.Brut.5, Hld. 5.1; τινί against a thing, Plu.Caes.17.
II. ἀ. τι fight off a thing, decline it, “ἀπεμαχέσαντο τοῦτο” Hdt.7.136: abs., “ὁ μὲν δὴ ταῦτα λέγων ἀπεμάχετο” Id.1.9; ἀ. μὴ λαβεῖν τὴν ἀρχήν D H.2.60.
III. “ἀ. τινά” drive off in battle, X.HG6.5.34.
IV. finish a battle, fight it out, Lys.3.25; resist, Arist.Pr.870b23.
V. metaph., counteract, ταῖς “ἀποφοραῖς” Aët.16.24.
