Pulvinus

The side of an Ionic capital volute, also known as the baluster side of the capital.

Description: In the Archaic period the pulvinius generally assumed a cylindrical form. In later examples it was given a concave profile, flaring at the extremities and resembling a spool, or it may take the form of intertwined lilies. Sometimes the baluster side of the Ionic capital is pinched at the center, forming a slightly flat band called a balteus.
