I. surround, cover, enclose, “ἅλμη οἱ νῶτα ἄμπεχεν” Od.6.225; “κυνῆ πρόσωπα Θεσσαλίς νιν ἀμπέχει” S.OC314, cf. A.l.c.: metaph., ἀ. τινὰ σμικρότητι invest one with . . , Pl.Prt.320e: abs., σκότος ἀμπίσχων surrounding darkness, E.Hipp.192; κρυπτὸν ἀμπισχὼν δόρυ, of the wooden horse, Id.Tr.12; “τὰ ἀμπέχοντα ὑμένια” Aret.SA 2.2.
2. embrace. “γόνυ σὸν ἀμπίσχειν χερί” E.Supp.165.
II. put round, esp. put clothes and the like on another, c. dupl. acc., “κρίβανόν μ᾽ ἀμπίσχετε” Ar.V.1153, cf. Ra.1063, Lys.1156: with prep., τοίχοισιν δ᾽ ἔπι ἤμπισχεν . . ὑφάσματα put them all over . . , E.Ion1159: metaph., “ἡ βασιλικὴ τέχνη δούλους καὶ ἐλευθέρους ἀμπίσχουσα” Pl.Plt. 311c.
2. Med., put round oneself, put on, “πέπλους” E.Med.1159; wear, “τὸ τῆς γυναικὸς ἀμπέχει χιτώνιον” Ar.Ec.374; λευκὸν ἀμπέχει;; do you wear a white cloak?
