ἀπόλειψις , εως, ἡ, (ἀπολείπω)
A.abandonment, “ἡ ἀ. τοῦ στρατοπέδου” Th.7.75; defection, Id.4.126; desertion of a husband by his wife (cf. “ἀπολείπω” 11.1), D.30.15; ἀπόλειψιν ἀπογράφεσθαι (v. “ἀπογράφω” 111.2) ib.17 (but also, = ἀπόπεμψις, ἀ. γράψασθαι Plu.2.100e); desertion by soldiers, seamen, etc., X.HG4.1.28, D.50.11.
II. intr., deficiency, of rivers, failing, Arist.Mete.351a21 (pl.); of the moon, waning, Id.GA767a5; of the sun, departure to southern hemisphere, Jul.Or.4.137d.
2. death, “δοιὴ δὲ θνητῶν γένεσις, δοιὴ δ᾽ ἀ.” Emp.17.3; “ἀ. τοῦ ζην” Hyp.Epit.24; “ἐκ τοῦ ὄντος” Porph.Sent.20.
