ἄφθι^τος , ον, (φθίνω)
A.not liable to perish, undecaying, imperishable, freq. in Hom. (mostly in Il.) and Trag.:
1. of things, “σκῆπτρον πατρώϊον ἄ. αἰεί” Il.2.46; “χρυσέη ἴτυς ἄ.” 5.724; “καλὸν θρόνον ἄ. αἰεί” 14.238; “Ἡφαίστου δόμος” 18.370; “ἄ. ἄμπελοι” Od.9.133; “ἄντρον” Pi. I.8(7).41; “πυρὸς φέγγος” A.Ch.1037; “Γᾶ” S.Ant.339 (lyr.).
2. of persons, immortal, of the gods, h.Merc.326; “Στύξ” Hes. Th.389,397; of Tantalus, Pi.O.1.63; ἄ. ὑμνοπόλος, of Anacreon, Simon.184; “ἀφθίτους θεῖναι βροτούς” A.Eu.724; “γέννας ἀφθίτου λαχόντες” S.Fr. 278.
