φοίνιος , α, ον, also ος, ον Pi.I.4(3).35(53):—poet.Adj., used for φόνιος, when the first syll. is to be long,
A.of or like blood, blood-red, “αἷμα” Od.18.97, A.Th.737(lyr.), S.Ph.783; “δρόσος” A.Ag.1390; φ. στάλαγμα, i. e. blood, S.Ant.1239.
II. bloody, blood-stained, φ. ἀλκά, of Ajax, Pi.l.c.; φ. ξυνωρίς, prob. of public and private loss, A.Ag.643; “χεὶρ φ.” S.Aj.772; “χεῖρες” Id.OT466 (lyr.); κοπίς prob. for κόνις in Id.Ant. 601 (lyr.).
2. bloody, murderous, “Σκύλλα” A.Ch.614(lyr.); πέπληγμαι . . δήγματι (prob. δάκει）“ φοινίῳ” Id.Ag.1164 (lyr.), cf. 1278; “φ. Ἄρης” S.El.96 (anap.); “ἔχιδνα” Id.Tr.770: metaph., φ. σάλος, of pestilence, Id.OT24, cf. Aj.352.—Rare in Com., Ar.Th.694.
