Hom. always metaph., τὸ μὲν τελέει, τὸ δὲ μεσσηγὺ κολούει part he brings to pass, part he cuts off half-accomplished, of the threats of Achilles, Il.l.c.; μηδὲ τὰ δῶρα . . κολούετε curtail them not, Od.11.340; ἕο δ᾽ αὐτοῦ πάντα κολούει cuts off all his hopes, 8.211; κολούειν εἰς τὰ τῆς τέχνης ἔργα hinders performance in the art, Gal.5.733.
