A.far on in the ordinal series first, second, third, etc., π. ὢν Συρακοσίων καὶ τῷ γένει καὶ τῇ δόξῃ, i. e. far from the most eminent of the Syracusans, Isoc.5.65; κίνησις . . δευτέρα τε καὶ ὁπόσων ἀριθμῶν βούλοιτο ἄν τις ἀριθμεῖν αὐτὴν πολλοστὴν τοσούτων, i.e. infinitely less important, Pl.Lg.896b; πότερον . . τὰ σκληρότατα . . ἢ . . τὰ πολλοστὰ σκληρότητι; things far down in descending order of hardness, Id.Phlb.44e; αἱ π. ἡδοναί, opp. αἱ ἀκρόταται καὶ σφοδρόταται, ibid. 2. with ἀπό, remote, τρίται καὶ π. ἀπὸ [τῆς Νυκτός] Herm. in Phdr.p.144 A.; “ἀπὸ τῆς δημιουργίας” Iamb. Myst.3.28; “ἀπὸ τῆς οἰκείας ἀρχῆς” Procl.Inst.110; ἀπὸ τῶν θεῶν, ἀπὸ τῆς ἀρχικῆς μονάδος, ib.119, 181.
3. π. μέρος or μόριον, a fraction with one for numerator and with a large denominator, i. e. a small fraction, “π. τι μέρος” And.2.8, cf. X.Mem.4.6.7; “π. μόριον” Th.6.86: freq. with a neg., “οὐδὲ [τὸ] π. μέρος” Lys.14.46, cf. Is.1.34; “μηδὲ πολλοστὸν ἐξευρίσκειν τινῶν” Phld.Rh.1.210S.
4. of Time, π. ἔτει in the last of many years, i.e. after many years, Cratin.Jun.9; π. χρόνῳ after a very long time, Ar.Pax559, D.24.196, 57.18, Men.329.
II. in later Gr., = πολύς, πολλοστὸς ἔργοις one that has done a great deal, LXX 2 Ki.23.20, cf. Pr.5.19.
