A.the right of seizing the ship or cargo of a foreign merchant, to cover losses received through him: generally, right of seizure, right of reprisal, prop. of goods (opp. ἀνδροληψία)“, σῦλον ἔχειν κατά τινοςArist.Oec.1347b23; “ἐν σύλῳwhen engaged in privateering, IG12(5).24.11 (Sicinos): but mostly in pl. σῦλαι or “σῦλα, διὰ τὰς σύλαςD.51.13; ὅπου ἂν σῦλαι μὴ ὦσιν Ἀθηναίοις where the Athenians have [to fear] no right of seizure, Syngr. ap. D.35.13; “δεδομένων συλῶν Φασηλίταις κατὰ ἈθηναίωνId.35.26; [ὁρῶν] Βοιωτοὺς σῦλα ποιουμένους [seeing] the B. exercising this right, Lys.30.22 (v.l.); “μήνυτρα σύλων ὧν θεὸς ἐσυλήθηBabr.2.12.
II. σῦλον is the cargo seized in IG9(1).333.5 (Locr., v. B.C.): σῦλα, τά,= booty, Str.17.1.8; σύλη, , booty, SIG10 (Samos, vi B.C.).
