A.make desolate, “χήρωσε δ᾽ ἀγυιάς” Il.5.642: esp. make a woman a widow, “χήρωσας δὲ γυναῖκα” 17.36; “Πριάμου γαῖ᾽ ἐχήρωσ᾽ Ἑλλάδα” E.Cyc.304:— Med., “ἐχηρώσαντο πόληα” Q.S.9.351.
2. c. gen., bereave, “με . . ἠελιου χήρωσεν” AP7.172 (Antip.Sid.); πνοιῆς ib.287 (Antip.):— Pass., τῶν . . αὑτοῦ χηρώσει (2sg.) πολλῶν (v.l. κτεάνων) Thgn.956; πολλῶν ἂν ἀνδρῶν ἥδ᾽ ἐχηρώθη πόλις would have been bereft of . . , Sol. 37; “Ἄργος ἀνδρῶν ἐχηρώθη” Hdt.6.83.
3. c. acc., forsake, deprive of one's presence, “ἀελίου χήρωσεν αὐγάς” Arist.Fr.675.13 (nisi leg. αὐγᾶς).
4. c. acc., take away, “πᾶσαν ἐρωήν” Opp.C.4.421.
