παραφυ^-άς , άδος, ἡ, (παραφύω)
A.side-growth,
1. in plants, sucker, off shoot, opp. παρασπάς, Thphr.HP2.2.4, cf. 1Enoch 26.1 : metaph., “παραφυάδι ἔοικε τοῦ ὄντος” Arist.EN1096a21, cf.Ph.1.330 (pl.).
2. in animals, branch of a vein, Hp.Oss.18 ; of certain appendages in the ἀστακός, Arist. HA526a29, cf. PA672b27.
3. metaph., of branches of a discussion, Stob.2.7.2, EM784.28, etc. ; also, “τὸ πρός τι παραφυάδι ἐοικός” Plot.6.2.16. [υ_ in Nic. Fr.80, perh. metri gr.]
