σφα^κελ-ίζω ,
A.suffer from σφάκελος, to be gangrened, mortify, “ἐσφακέλισέ τε τὸ ὀστέον καὶ ὁ μηρὸς ἐσάπη” Hdt.3.66; “σφακελίσαντος τοῦ μηροῦ καὶ σαπέντος” Id.6.136, cf. Pl.Ti.74b,84b, Arist.HA519b6; of the eyes, LXX Le.26.16, De.28.32: also in Pass., “ὁκόσοισιν ἂν σφακελισθῇ ὁ ἐγκέφαλος” Hp.Aph.7.50, cf. Morb.2.5 (v.l.).
2. of the effect of severe cold on single limbs, to be frost-bitten, D.H.12.8.
3. of plants and trees, to be blighted, Arist.Juv.470a31, Thphr.HP4.14.4, etc.
II. to have spasms or convulsions, “ἀπορεῖν καὶ ς. τῷ δεινῷ” Cratin.342, cf. Pherecr.80.
