II.in Od. mostly of contention, rivalry, ἔργοιο in work; ἀέθλων for prizes, etc.:—later much like ἀγών, a contest, ἔριν ἔχειν ἀμφὶ μουσικῇ Hdt.; ἔρις ἀγαθῶν zeal for good, Aesch.
